Background

Almost all kiwis are ready for harvest at the same time. Any delay will have a strongly influence on the quality during storage. As a result of this there are plenty of kiwis at harvest time at low prices. After the short harvest season the prices of kiwis raise, so storage for kiwis is a good investment.

Frouta Protofanousi S.A. is an exporting company of kiwi fruit. The harvest time of kiwis is short. If a kiwi is harvested at the right moment, the kiwi can be stored at a certain temperature, under controlled atmosphere for about 1 year, without losing quality. The controlled atmosphere ensures that the kiwis are not de-hydrated.

At Frouta Protofanousi the intake of kiwis is 400 tons per day @ 20°C.
In the pre cooling rooms, the kiwis are cooled down from 20°C to 5°C within 24 hours. After this, the Kiwis are stored in one of the 19 storage rooms at 0,5°C, with a controlled relative humidity of  92-95%.

Short description of the solution

A central engine room accommodates the Grasso refrigeration equipment. To keep the total Ammonia volume as low as possible, an indirect system with a central NH3 plant produces the required capacity for the secondary glycol system.
The system is fully automated with SCADA and PLC controlled. Communication between the various equipment runs via Profibus DP. Remote communication with the SCADA control system is possible via internet or equivalent network. To maximize the energy efficiency, the main components are equipped with power flex frequency drivers.

In this way, maximum capacity for cooling down the freshly harvested kiwis does not mean excessive and inefficient energy consumption during the storage phase.
